Night Sounds Lost

In the darkness, the old crippled fan rattles with every change in direction.  Rain falls in six different rhythms on the tin roof outside my window. 

Down on the road, somewhere – everywhere - dogs threaten strangers in the shadows.  A maelstrom of barks and howls demands I forsake my sleep.

A neighbor’s child cries with loud abandon yet tonight the funeral pigs are strangely quiet.  And no where can I hear you, though I listen desperately to every rustle of the coconut fronds.

Where is your sweet sigh upon the pillow?  Where is your soft, sleepy murmur, seeking of me a glass of cool water?

I cannot sleep, so I cannot dream of these things.  And now, alas, the rooster will be making his rounds soon.

Half Past the Apocalypse

Blue-tailed skinks scurry for cover, under stones wearing wet jade moss for show.  The pale sky was short with rain today; even the clouds seem aloof and uninterested.

From rusty metal drums, dead leaves burning, grey smoke rolls across the road.  It blows past white spider lilies, leaving its primal scent on my skin and clothes.

Young children also cross the road;  happy that school is over.  They laugh and giggle – as they too scurry for home.

Success of the Misaki Ito 1 （伊東美咲1を成功）

The Misaki Ito 1 worked beautifully.  The experiment was successful.  It held 200 kg (440 pounds).  It could have held even more weight.  It was also very stable in the water.  This would have been a good way to move basalt logs.  Now, on to the next step.

伊東美咲1が美しく働いた。 この実験は成功しました。  そのような名前で、それはどのように失敗するだろうか。 それは200 kg（440ポンド）を開催しました。  それはより多くの重量を開催している可能性があります。  それは水でも非常に安定していた。  これは玄武岩のログを移動するには良い方法だったでしょう。  さて、次のステップに移ります。

Launch of the Misaki Ito 1 (伊東美咲1を起動)

The archaeology experiment had started.  We were ready to launch the Misaki Ito 1 – our experimental raft.      One  of my  students is holding the vessel’s flag.  Would it succeed?   Would it fail?   We shall see if it works.

Nan Madol

This is photo of the most famous structure of Nan Madol – Nan Dawas.  I was sitting on a large outer wall (~10 m tall) with my back to the ocean.  There was some very serious engineering going on here.  This is only a small part of the total ruins.  What was the point of all this work? My imagination was running wild.  Of course, I have my own hypothesis.

Waiting for Misaki Ito (伊東美咲を待っている)

I am still waiting for any movie with Misaki Ito.  Meanwhile, I roamed around the ruins of Nan Madol.  They are quite amazing.  Photos just cannot capture it.  They are spread out over a very wide area.

I want to make my own movie.  It would be an adventure movie here in Pohnpei.  It stars Misaki Ito as a female Indian Jones.  There will be action, suspense, romance, machete fights, ghosts, sharks, and even a Gecko! Man! That would be awesome! Misaki Ito deserves a role like that in a $200 million dollar movie.

Until then, I’ll keep searching through these beautiful ruins.
