Actors playing surgeons (外科医を演じている俳優)

I see a lot of dramas, Asian and American, in which actors are playing doctors or surgeons. One thing I hate is when an actor does not hold the instruments correctly. I see this most often when they are supposed to be suturing a wound. It is not very convincing. So I took a picture to help out.

The needle forceps (left side of the photo) are used to guide the needles through the tissue. Hold the needle forceps with your thumb through the top loop and your ring finger (4th finger) through the bottom loop. Place your index finger (2nd finger) on or near the fulcrum to guide and stabilize your instrument when placing sutures.

In the picture above I am also holding a pair of scissors (pointing back towards my wrist) to cut the sutures. But this is just a personal preference of mine to save time. I can quickly switch between the two instruments when I have to throw a lot of interrupted sutures. I learned this when I worked at a veterinary hospital and used it in graduate school.
